Perusing through old backup drives of our photo shoots over the years, we stumbled across a folder of feature car shoots of various modified and/or privately owned Audis. Given their age, evolution and likely change of ownership over the years, we’re not in a position to publish them as feature cars, but we wanted to publish the photos just the same. First up is this R8 twin turbo built by Heffner shot in an Indy Car Paddock.
The back story on this car and this shoot is almost a feature unto itself. In Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park for a dual weekend of then GRAND-AM and Indy Car, we were guests of APR who’d been doing tuning work for Heffner. Heffner, of course, is the firm known for throwing turbochargers on countless exotics including Lamborghinis, Ford GTs and also the R8.
This particular R8 had been at APR for some calibrations and had been taken to the race weekend at Barber for display while APR’s S4 contested the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Series on the same weekend. The race was the focus of our visit, but the car’s presence in the somewhat laid back atmosphere following the Indy Car race made for an interesting photo shoot proposition.
As teams packed their rigs for departure, we asked then APR employee Keith Lucas to cruise around the paddock in the car. Not surprisingly, the car gathered a lot of attention as it passed by and this busy backdrop made for an interesting background in which to frame the Heffner R8.
Following the paddock cruise, we took the car to the now empty winner’s circle and even the front straight and pits of Barber Motorsports Park thanks to Keith’s familiarity with the track staff who otherwise would have barred entry.
As mentioned, we never had a chance to write this one up. We really wish we had. It’s an R8, a cool backdrop and it’s got a highly potent bolt on twin turbo system good for 636 hp at the crank and 540 hp at the wheels on 93 octane fuel. More information on the kit can be found HERE.
